PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A carjacking suspect is dead after he was shot by police following a wild chase on Monday evening in Philadelphia.
Chopper 6 was overhead around 8 p.m. as a driver in a gray Toyota Camry was being chased by police along Roosevelt Boulevard.
Action News is the only station that captured the chaotic moments during the five-mile chase.
At one point, the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Jerome Cooper, could be seen traveling at a high rate of speed against traffic. Cooper can even be seen pointing what appears to be a gun out the window.
Officers later swarmed the vehicle after it hit a tree in a grassy median at Roosevelt Boulevard and Langdon Street in the city's Summerdale section.
Police say Cooper came out of the vehicle armed, and that's when he was shot multiple times. We're told seven officers fired shots, including five Highway Patrol officers, one 15th district officer, and a 25th district officer, according to Commissioner Kevin Bethel.
Cooper was struck at least 10 times and rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"You see time and time again that when there's danger, the men and women rise up in this department and go after those individuals who cause harm to the community," Bethel said.
Police say this all started with a carjacking by a Public Storage facility near the intersection of G Street and East Hunting Park Avenue around 7:11 p.m.
That's where Cooper allegedly shot a 32-year-old man in the stomach before stealing the victim's Toyota.
During that encounter, police say Cooper exchanged fire with a 29-year-old witness.
A chase then ensued through multiple police districts.
Bethel said it is believed the suspect fired at least one gunshot at pursuing officers while on the 700 block of East Cheltenham Avenue.
"We did recover a [fired cartridge casing] and we believe at that point he fired out of the car at pursuing officers," Bethel said.
The 32-year-old shooting victim from the initial scene is listed as stable at Temple University Hospital.
The actions of the 29-year-old who exchanged fire with Cooper are under investigation, police say.
